Fremont Street Looking West - 1950
Westward view of 1950 Fremont Street looking towards the train depot from First Street.
This view can be confusing at first glance since the Vegas Vic Pioneer sign is seen on
the right side. This sign was installed across from the Pioneer Club and used an arrow to
point to the club across the street. The more-remembered, full 'Vegas Vic' neon cowboy
would be erected a year later (1951) on the corner of The Pioneer Club (on left).
The old Pioneer 'cactus and covered wagon' signs, The Monte Carlo and Sal Sagev neon signs
can be seen at left. On the immediate right is the old Bank of Nevada Building. This spot would
later become the site of the 'Birdcage Casino' and in 1959 the location of The Mint Casino's
expansion to the corner of Fremont and First Street. The 'Vegas Vic Arrow Sign' (on top of
the pharmacy building) was later removed and the location later became the site for the Carousel
Casino, then The Silver Palace, Sassy Sally's (& Golden Goose) and now the site of 'Mermaids'.

1953 Horseshoe Club
The Horseshoe Club opened in the lobby of the 1931 Apache Hotel in 1953.
This area was the former site of Tony Cornero's 'S.S. Rex Casino'. Cornero
built the 1931 Meadows Casino and in 1955 developed the Stardust Casino
on the Las vegas Strip. The Eldorado Casino occupied this location after that
and in the early 1950s became the Joe W. Brown (Binions) Horseshoe Casino.

Overland Hotel's facade covered with Biff's Restaurant neon sign. The 1957 Mint and its 1959
corner expansion casino had not yet been constructed.
On the right can be seen the 1955 Golden Gate Casino's neon bridge later replaced by the
combined circular hotel and casino sign. The Monte Carlo Club sign is seen, though seen
removed in picture below. The Bingo sign was later replaced by The Lucky Strike's tower.

be seen, followed by the 1956 Fremont Hotel's red neon sign.
On the right is the former Sal Sagev Hotel, which leased its ground floor out for the
1955 Golden Gate Casino. The Pioneer Club's 'Vegas Vic' neon cowboy is seen just beyond.

was removed in the late 1960s to make way for the Golden Nugget's expansion.
